Fir Needle essential oil is extracted from the fir tree and is probably best known as a Christmas tree, as it was the first species widely used to represent the holiday. The main origins of fir needle essential oil, besides Canada, are the densely-forested areas of France, Germany, and Bulgaria. Native Americans used fir needles in their pillows to promote a peaceful sleep, and after childbirth, it was burned to stimulate perspiration and help women to recover their strength more quickly. Most fir needle essential oil is derived from silver fir or balsam fir varieties, but be aware that if the source is anything but the species abies, it is not a true fir.
