Description: Palo Santo essential oil is derived from the Bursera Graveolens tree, known as “Palo Santo” in Spanish. This tree is native to the Gran Chaco region of South America and was used by the Incas to heal or rid negative energies. The essential oil is distilled from the heartwood of the tree and can only be harvested from heartwood that is at least two years of age, but can take longer than 10 years for the best quality oil. Palo Santo is known as an endangered species, especially in Peru, where the government enforces strict harvesting practices. Only branches and trees that die or fall naturally may be harvested for use. This is to ensure that none of the trees are cut down for wood harvesting. The essential oil is thin and generally a middle note in perfumery. Aromatically, Palo Santo is known to help relieve negative energy and increase feelings of calm and peacefulness.
