Several essential oils have a solid reputation for supporting digestive comfort when used aromatically or applied topically (diluted) over the abdomen. Peppermint oil is the most well-researched — its menthol content helps relax smooth muscle in the digestive tract, making it particularly useful for bloating, IBS-related discomfort, and nausea. Ginger essential oil is warming and carminative, supporting overall digestive health and helping with indigestion, nausea, and sluggish digestion. Fennel oil has antispasmodic properties traditionally used for trapped gas and stomach cramps. Cardamom is soothing and carminative, widely used in Ayurvedic practice for digestive complaints. Lemon essential oil diffused or inhaled can also help ease nausea. A simple home remedy is to dilute 3–4 drops of peppermint or ginger essential oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil such as coconut or sweet almond oil, and gently massage in a clockwise direction over the abdomen — the direction that follows the natural path of digestion. Always dilute thoroughly before topical use, and never ingest essential oils without professional guidance.
