Contraindications: Citrus essential oils are largely phototoxic, which means that if you apply them topically, even a small amount of sun exposure can cause extreme burning and damage to the skin. Mandarin essential oil is said to be an exception, and is notconsidered phototoxic if cold-pressed from the outer rind of the fruit. However, phototoxicity does exist in Mandarin Petitgrain oil, which is steam distilled from the leaves and wood of the tree and has a completely different chemical composition. To be safe, it is always best to test on a small area of skin until you know your tolerance, and do protect any exposed skin if you are going out in the sun.
